यदि कोई व्यक्ति किसी को बुरा-भला कहता है, गलत व्यवहार करता है या किसी भी प्रकार की चोट पहुँचाता है तो उसे अपने अंतर्मन से ग्लानि का अहसास होता है। उसे ऐसा लगता है कि उसके साथ भी कभी भी कुछ बुरा घटित हो सकता है या जिसका बुरा उसने किया है, वह भी किसी-न-किसी रूप में उससे बदला अवश्य लेगा। जैसे – ध्यानचंद जब ‘पंजाब रेजिमेंट’ की ओर से ‘सैं पर्स एंड माइनर्स’ टीम के साथ खेल रहे थे तो उनसे मुकाबला न कर पाने पर एक खिलाड़ी ने उनके सिर पर स्टिक दे मारी। लेकिन थोड़ी देर के बाद जब मेजर ध्यानचंद सिर पर पट्टी बाँधकर फिर से खेलने आ गए तो वह मन-ही-मन डरने लगा।
(ख) “मेरी तो हमेशा यह कोशिश रहती कि मैं गेंद को गोल के पास ले जाकर अपने किसी साथी खिलाड़ी को दे दूँ ताकि उसे गोल करने का श्रेय मिल जाए। अपनी इसी खेल भावना के कारण मैंने दुनिया के खेल प्रेमियों का दिल जीत लिया।”

ध्यानचंद की सफलता का रहस्य था उनकी खेल के प्रति सच्ची लगन, साधना और खेल भावना। उन्होंने जब हॉकी खेलना शुरू किया तो वे बिल्कुल नौसिखिए थे। धीरे-धीरे अभ्यास से उनके खेल में निखार आता गया और उनको तरक्की भी मिलती गई। हॉकी सीखने के लिए कठिन से कठिन परिस्थितियों में भी वे निरंतर प्रयासरत रहे। 1936 में वे बर्लिन ओलंपिक टीम के कप्तान बने और अपने हॉकी खेलने के ढंग से लोगों को इतना प्रभावित किया कि ‘हॉकी के जादूगर’ कहलाए।
