What is NEET Cutoff?

It is known to everyone that if a student wishes to study MBBS, (s)he has to sit for NEET to qualify for admission in any medical college whether government or private. But, many are still confused about the process. A lot of students sit for NEET, but how is their eligibility for admission determined? One of the determining factors of the result or the rank of the student is the cutoff marks.  In this article, we will discuss one of the “after NEET” things i.e cutoff marks which is very important in determining the rank of the student.

The NEET cut-off is the score that determines whether or not you will be admitted to a medical school. It shows the minimal qualifying percentile that applicants must achieve in order to be considered for admission. To be eligible for counselling, one must pass the NEET cut-off. You'll have a better chance of getting a seat if you score higher than the NEET cut-off. Every year, cut-offs are adjusted based on a variety of factors, including the number of candidates who apply, the difficulty level, and so on.

MBBS Admission Process After NEET Results

Following the announcement of the results, NEET exam participants must go through the counselling process. Only those candidates who have passed the NEET cut off set by the NTA are eligible for counselling. The cut-off score is the minimum score needed to pass the NEET tests and be considered qualified. The qualifying percentiles for various categories are as follows:

General Category - 50th percentile

OBC/SC/ST Category - 40th percentile

Physically Handicapped: 45th percentile in the general category

Physically Handicapped: 40th percentile for OBC/SC/ST.

To Summarise, After the Results have Been Announced:

  • You must get the NEET cut-off score.

  • Apply for the NEET counselling process.

  • Participate in the counselling session.

  • Obtain admittance to medical schools.

MBBS Seat Distribution

The seats of MBBS are available as:

Counselling Authority

Seat Type

Directorate General of Health Services

All India Quota Seats (except J&K students)

All seats in deemed and central universities

State Counselling Authority

All private colleges across India (except for state quota seats that are to be availed only by domiciled candidates)

State quota seats in State government colleges (only for domiciled candidates)

All India Quota Seats - Except for Jammu and Kashmir, the NEET AIQ scheme covers 15% of MBBS/BDS seats at all government dental and medical colleges in India. All candidates who pass the NEET exam are eligible to apply. Candidates from J&K cannot apply unless they have submitted a self-declaration form when filling out the NEET application form. As a result, candidates from a specific state can still apply for admission to government institutes in other states, including their own, through AIQ. To apply for AIQ counselling, one must fill out an application form issued by the DGHS (Directorate General of Health Services) on behalf of the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).

Central and Deemed University Seats - All seats are reserved for candidates who have passed the NEET exams. The various universities that fall under the purview of central universities are as follows:

  • Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

  • Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)

  • Delhi University (DU) Affiliated Colleges

  • Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI)

DGHS, like AIQ, is the central and deemed universities' counselling authority. Counseling for Deemed and Central Universities typically begins in the second week of June (tentative). To apply, students must fill out an application form for Deemed and Central Universities counselling, which is issued by the DGHS.

State Quota Seats - After handing over 15% of seats in AIQ, the remaining 85% of seats for dental and medical courses that fall under the state quota seats stay with government institutes. Candidates from the individual states are usually the ones who fill these seats. In order to apply for state quota seats in their respective state government colleges, candidates must complete the form as provided by their corresponding state counselling officials. Some states may start the application process before NEET and then release the NEET state quota counselling applications after the results are released.

Private College Seats - Private colleges are a blessing to most students because they are more flexible than government colleges when it comes to domicile criterion, allowing students to apply under this category in as many states as they like. Regardless of their state of residency or domicile, all NEET qualified candidates are able to apply for seats in private institutes (dental and medical) across the country. This can be accomplished by completing the application paperwork provided by the appropriate state counselling officials. However, some private institutions reserve a set number of seats for the state quota, which are reserved solely for applicants from specific states, and only they are eligible to apply.
