Hint: The first Civil Disobedience movement in India was started by Mahatma Gandhi on 12th March, 1930. The movement began with the salt march which is also known as the Dandi march to protest against the British monopoly over salt. With this began the Civil Disobedience movement in India. The salt law of the British prohibited Indians from collecting or selling salt which is an important ingredient of every food.

Thousands of women came out from their domestic lives and listened to Gandhi’s speeches. Women participated in salt collection, picketing of liquor and foreign cloth. In the urban areas women of high caste participated in the movement and in the rural areas women from peasant households took part in the activities.
In spite of the mass participation of women in the Civil Disobedience movement, they were not given important positions in the movement. There were no such radical changes in the position of women. Bengal was the chief location when it came to revolutionary activities. In 1930 a large number of women gathered in front of Bethune College in Calcutta to support the Civil Disobedience movement.
