The reproductive system has very different structures and organs. The female gamete is an egg cell found inside the female reproductive system while inside the male reproductive system, the male gamete sperm resides.

Humans are bisexual organisms which mean males and females have specified but different reproductive organs. In humans, the process of fusion of the male gamete (sperm) and the female gamete (egg) is called the fertilization. During conception, the male sperm moves inside the female body where it fuses with the female egg resulting in the fertilization inside the fallopian tube. The breeding in the case of humans can take throughout the functioning of their reproductive structures. In the case of males, it can take place throughout their life starting from puberty while in the case of females it occurs from puberty until the occurrence of menopause.
-The fertilized egg reaches the uterus after it flows down the fallopian tube. An embryo will start to develop if it is inserted successfully into the uterus. The Fallopian tubes are the part of the female reproductive system that joins the ovaries and the uterus and are also called uterine tubes or salpinges (singular salpinx) where the process of fertilization occurs. The sperms swim through the vagina inside the female reproductive system and come in contact with the zona pellucida layer of the ovum and then release certain hormones to hydrolyze the layer and enter inside the ovum for fusion.
-Only one sperm can fuse with the ovum and after its entry, it prevents the entry of the other sperms. Thus the egg is fertilized by only one sperm, therefore, no occurrence of polyspermy. When the sperm and ovum fuse together the result will be a diploid zygote. The zygote has the ability to develop a completely new individual.

From the Greek word Sperma, the term sperm is derived that means ‘seed’. In 1827, Karl Ernst von Baer was the one who discovered the ovum in mammals. William Harvey in 1578-1657 proposed that the egg cell is responsible for the production of every living cell. In the case of starfish, Oskar Hertwig in 1876 was the first one to observe reproduction in them.
