- Diseases or conditions which are transmitted through sexual intercourse are called Sexually Transmitted Diseases and in short STD. It is also called venereal diseases (VD) or reproductive tract infections (RTI).
- The causes of Sexually Transmitted Diseases are bacteria, viruses and parasites. There are more than 20 types of STDs including syphilis, gonorrhea, genital warts, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, chlamydiasis, hepatitis-B HIV/AIDS etc.
- Many STDs are spread through contacts with infected body fluids such as semen, blood, vaginal fluids, breastfeeding and not only by sexual intercourse.

Reasons for the infection:
Some of these infections like HIV/AIDS can also be transmitted by sharing of infected needles, surgical instruments etc. Mostly STDs are curable especially in early stages whereas others can lead to severe complications if a person does not seek treatment like abortions, infertility, cancer of reproductive tract.

Symptoms:
Some of the common STDs symptoms included itching, swellings, changes in urination, unusual discharge from the penis, burning or itching in the vaginal area, bleeding or abnormal vaginal discharge, bumps or sores. This symptom varies from disease to disease that can be identified by diagnosis.

Note: It can be transmitted by having sexual intercourse with an infected person but also can be transmitted by using personal items of the infected person. It can be avoided only by taking a few basic precautions.
