It was in the year 1854 that the first successful textile mill in Mumbai was established. thereafter the textile industry in Mumbai has rapidly expanded mainly because of the favorable climatic conditions such as warm and humid climate available in Mumbai and availability of skilled and cheap labor, raw material, port and a huge market. Therefore, these factors have facilitated the rapid expansion of the cotton textile industries in Mumbai.
Note: At the international level India is the largest producer of cotton with 29 million bales of cotton production in the year 2019-20. In India, the state that has the largest production of cotton is Maharashtra and Mumbai is also located in the same state where the production of cotton textile initially started.
