We know that the supply from the power station has three wires: live wire, neutral wire and earth wire. For an appliance which draws little current and runs on the supply of 200-220V, we connect the terminals to live wire and neutral wire.
The following figure shows the connection of plug socket, bulb and fan to the mains.
In the above figure, red wire represents live wire which carries current, the black wire represents neutral wire and the blue wire represents earth wire.
The mains supply is given to the main switch which may contain the fuse according to the load. Generally we use 32A fuse. To connect the bulb, we have taken the connection from the live wire and neutral wire and connected to the two terminals of the light bulb. To connect the fan, we have done the same connection.
We know that in a parallel combination, the voltage remains the same. Therefore, if the home appliances are connected to the live wire and neutral wire that is a parallel combination, the next appliance gets the same value of voltage supply as that of the former appliances. But in case of high power rating appliances like heater, geyser, iron, etc. are provided with top pin must be connected to live, neutral and earth wire or the plug socket as shown in the above figure. If there is any fault in the instrument, the current will not pass through the person and earth wire will direct the current path to the ground. This will trip the MCB in our house.
