In this process of oogenesis, the oogonia divides forming the primary oocyte. Each primary oocyte then gets surrounded by a granulosa layer and is known as the primary follicle. The primary follicles are then surrounded by new layers and are then called secondary follicles.
The secondary follicle then changes into tertiary follicles. The cavity of this tertiary follicle gets filled with a fluid and is called the antrum. The cell further undergoes division and forms a secondary oocyte and a polar body.
The tertiary follicle now changes into Graafian follicle. The secondary oocyte gets surrounded by zona pellucida. Now the Graafian follicle ruptures and releases the secondary oocyte. The process is known as ovulation.

Oogenesis takes place once in a lifetime during the embryo formation. After this no more oogonia are formed during the lifetime of the female unlike the male reproductive system where the spermatogenesis takes place during the lifetime.
