Complete Answer:
For sustaining and improving life on earth various sources of energy have been used by mankind. A few of these sources of energy have been used by humans traditionally to suit his purpose. Conventional sources of energy cannot be reused once they are exhausted. Hence, they are also widely known as non-renewable sources of energy. The different conventional sources of energy are coal, petroleum, natural gas, firewood, straw, and dried dung.
Coal is a widely used fossil fuel. It is a hydrocarbon but contains oxygen, sulphur, and nitrogen along with a vast amount of carbon. This fossil fuel can be graded into three categories according to its carbon content: peat, bituminous, and anthracite. Due to humongous pressure, these sediments were cemented to form rocks. At the point when pteridophytes, woodlands, and bogs fell, they were covered under such residue shaping tremendous assets of hydrocarbons in a huge number of years. These hydrocarbons are utilized as powers and are known as petroleum derivatives. Example: Coal, petrol.
Coal is used to commercially produce electricity in thermal power plants. It is also used as a domestic fuel in rural areas. India ranks seventh in terms of the coal reserves found in the country.

Note:
The major coal deposits in India are found in the states of Jharkhand, Orissa, Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh. The coal found in India is of low quality and leaves behind a lot of residues. This residue is known as Fly ash. It finds its utility in the cement industry.
