The process in which two reactants such as acid and alcohol are reacted to form the product ester is called esterification. The general formula for the esters made from carboxylic acids is RCOOR’. The structure of ester has a carbon to oxygen double bond which is also singly bonded to a second oxygen atom. The oxygen atom is also bonded to the aryl or alkyl group. The smallest ester that can be formed is allyl hexanoate.
