a.The General Assembly: The General Assembly is the only body with universal representation. It consists of 193 member states. The General Assembly is the policy making body of the United Nations. Every year in September all the members gather in the General Assembly Hall in New York to discuss important issues like world peace, budget issues and security. Each member has one vote. Every year a President for the General Assembly is elected for one year. The majority of the Assembly is two thirds.
b.The Security Council: The chief responsibility of the Security Council is the maintenance of international peace and security. The total members of the security are 15. 5 are permanent members and 10 non permanent. Each member has one vote. The Security Council detects rise of threat or aggression. It asks the parties in dispute to resolve the issues peacefully. The Security council can also take action and if required use necessary force to restore peace. The President changes every month.
c.Economic and Social Council: This body of the United Nations is for coordination, policy review, dialogues and the discussion of environmental and economic issues as agreed upon international developmental goals. It has 54 members elected by the General Assembly for overlapping terms of three years. This group of the United Nations reflects on sustainable development.
d.Trusteeship Council: Under the UN charter, chapter XII, the Trusteeship Council was established in 1945.The responsibility of this Council included to provide International supervision and self governance to the 11 territories which were placed under seven member states. By 1994 all the territories did achieve independence and the Council was dissolved. According to a resolution taken in 1994,the Council suspended meetings annually and decided only to meet whenever the occasion arose .
e.International Court of Justice: The International Court of Justice is the main judiciary body of the UN. Its headquarters are in Hague, Netherlands. The role of the court is to resolve disputes submitted by the states in accordance with international law . It gives out advice and opinions on legal issues also.
f.Secretariat: The Secretariat is a body that comprises the Secretary General and other staff of the United Nations who work day to day in accordance with the principles of the UN and its other principal bodies. The Secretary General is elected by the General Assembly on the opinion of the Security Council. This person holds the position of the chief administrative officer of the UN and has a tenure of five years which is renewable.
