There are about two hundred and fifty thousand of species known Butterflies are insects from the order Lepidoptera, which also includes moths. Adult butterflies have large and brightly colored wings. They are considered to be colorful insects.

Butterflies are believed to have existed before man. They are a diurnal group of insects. It belongs to the order Lepidoptera under the phylum Arthropoda which is the largest phylum. It comprises about 16500 species.

In Uganda, there are about more than 1245 species of butterflies enriched with a variety of wing color patterns. The butterflies of Uganda show a group of great diversification and mainly comprises two superfamilies. These families are Papilionoidea (true butterflies) and Hesperidin (skippers).

Family Papilionidae - Swallowtails.
Family Pieridae - Whites and yellow.
Family Lycaenidae - Small to medium-sized butterflies.
Family Nymphalidae - Four footed butterflies.
Family Satyrinae - Brown and ringlets.
Family Danaidae - Milkweed butterflies/Danaids.
Family Charaxinae - Large and beautiful with extremely powerful wings.
Family Nopalina - Nymphalids.
Family Acraeinae - Acraea.

The butterflies of Howrah district, West Bengal, India comprises 106 species including 75 genera and 6 families.
