Hint: Two words namely: singular and plural. When a noun is singular it means that there is only an object or person or when a noun is a plural it means that there is more than one object or person. For example glass – glasses; hour – hours; house – houses.
Complete answer:
Singular nouns can be made plural by simply adding – S or Es to the end of the word. There are different rules for the pluralization of the words depending on what letter of the noun it ends with. So, as per rule 2) when a singular noun ends with “SS” put ‘ES’ at the end of the word. Thus, the singular noun ‘guess’ ends with ‘SS’ then to make it plural we will add ‘ES’ at the end of the noun.
Therefore, Guess – Guesses is the correct plural form.
Additional information:
1) To make regular nouns plural – put ‘S’ at the end of the word. For example, Cat – cats; dog – dogs.
2) When a singular noun ends with – S, SS, SH, CH, X or Z – then in such cases put ‘ES’ to the end of the word. For example, marsh – marshes; lunch – lunches; tax – taxes.
3) If a singular noun ends with – S or Z then in such cases you just double the S or Z before putting ‘ES’ to the end of the word. For example, gas – gasses; fez – fezzes.
4) If a noun ending with F or FE then add ‘-VE’ before adding ‘S’ to the word ending. For example, wife – wives; wolf – wolves.
5) If a noun word ends with ‘Y’ then put ‘IES’ to the end of the word because ‘Y’ is consonant. For example, city – cities; puppy – puppies.
Note: It is very important to understand that every noun does not take ‘S’ or ‘ES’ at the end of the words. There are certain cases that have to be kept in mind about all are the other types of plurals.
1) There are certain nouns that have to be memorized, in other words, there are some singular ones whose plural has to be memorized. Such as man – men; tooth – teeth; foot – feet.
2) Some nouns that do not have any singular form are always plural such as scissors; milk, hair, etc. The word scissors itself is a plural form and does not have any singular term.
3) Nouns that are used with modifiers, in such cases we change the noun rather than the modifiers such as daughter-in-law – daughters-in-lar; son-in-law – sons-in-law.
