Hint: Chemical indicator is a substance that gives a visible sign, usually by a color change, when there is a presence or absence of a threshold concentration of a chemical substance, such as an acid or an alkali in a solution.

Complete answer:

A pH scale measures the number of hydronium or hydroxide in a solution. In other words, it tells us how basic or acidic the solution is. A solution with lower pH means something is more acidic, also known as a stronger acid. A Solution with higher pH means it is more alkaline or a stronger base.

You can make your own indicator using beetroot by following steps:

You will need:

  • Beetroot -2 or 3
  • Knife
  • Water
  • Spoon
  • Mixer grinder
  • Orange juice

Procedure:

  • Take some beetroots, wash them and peel them with the help of a knife.
  • Chop the beetroot into pieces.
  • Put those pieces into a mixer grinder and make a paste.
  • Add some water to the paste. Now filter this and collect only juice from this.

Observation and Result:

Now add 5 to 6 drops of this beetroot juice to orange juice (5 to 6 drops) and mix it with the help of a spoon.

We can see the color changes. This indicates the presence of acidic nature in orange juice.

Note: Beetroots, blackberries, plums, turnip skin, and more all act as an edible natural pH indicator. They have anthocyanin in them which makes the solution change color, but they differ when side groups are attached to the main molecule because the color changes vary between foods.
