Alternating current is an electric current which periodically reverses direction it may be sinusoidal in nature. Whereas, direct current flows only in one direction and has a constant magnitude.
We do not always need alternating current for instruments. In many systems that use motors we might need a direct current. This process of converting alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC) is called rectification. This is usually done because direct currents are harder to create, so it’s usually more convenient to just convert alternating current into direct current.

Mostly diodes are used for the process of rectification. A diode is an electric device that allows current to pass in only one direction. Two diodes are used in a full wave rectifier. In a full wave rectifier, both the cycles of supply are rectified. Each diode is used in one cycle. When the positive cycle occurs, one diode works on rectifying it. When the negative cycle occurs, the other diode works on rectifying it. In the end, there is zero loss in power. The value of output in the full wave rectifier is more than that in the half wave rectifier.
