The Red Fort is a historic fort in the city of Delhi in India that served as the main residence of the Mughal Emperors. It was considered as the throne for the Mughals after it was built by Shahjahan. It had a long historical importance. The revolt of 1857 was also initiated by the seoys after they went to Red Fort for the permission of Bahadur shah zafar in May 1857. Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned construction of the Red Fort on 12 May 1638, when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi.
Originally red and white, its design is credited to architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who also constructed the Taj Mahal. It was constructed between May 1639 and April 1648. On 15 August 1947, the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate. The Lahori Gate is the main gate which is used as an entrance gate for Red Fort.
The importance of Red fort is visible because every year on India's Independence Day, the prime minister hoists the Indian "tricolour flag" at the fort's main gate. Red fort is a world heritage site recognized by UNESCO. The massive structure of the red fort is made of red sandstone and had a strategic importance at that time for the Mughals. Shah Jahan, was the fifth Mughal emperor and he ruled from 1628 to 1658. Under his reign, the Mughal Empire reached the peak of its cultural glory. He was best remembered for his architectural achievements. Some of the most unique and outstanding architectures were built by Shahjahan only like Taj Mahal, Moti Masjid, Jama Masjid.
Let’s examine the option one by one:
A) This option is correct because the Red fort in Delhi was built by Shahjahan in 1648. Shah Jahan built a number of structures in India during his reign. He was considered as a major exponent of architecture among the Mughal emperors. He also built Taj mahal, Moti masjid and Jama masjid.
B) This option is not correct because the Red fort was not built by Akbar. Akbar built many structures like Akbar Fort, Jodhabai palace, Buland Darwaza.
C) This option is also not correct because the Red fort was not built by Humayun. Humayun was the father of Akbar and he was the great grandfather of Shahjahan who built the Red fort.
D) Aurangzeb was the 6th Muhal emperor who ruled over almost the entire Indian subcontinent for a period of 49 years. He was the son of Shah Jahan and Red Fort was built by his father not by him. So this option is not correct.
Thus the correct answer is option ‘A’ . Shahjahan built the Red fort of Delhi in 1648.
