The superposition principle, in mathematical terms, suggests that if two states are a solution to the equation then the linear combination of these two solutions is also a solution to the equation. For understanding this with an example, consider light emitted from a bulb. If the bulb is held so that it emits light in the north and east direction, the light should also emit in all directions from north to east.

Schrodinger’s cat is a wonderful example which is in terms of quantum superposition. This was a famous thought experiment or Erwin Schrodinger which had a radioactive source, a flask of poison, a cat and a device capable of detecting radioactivity and all are placed in a box.

When the device detects the radiation, the poison is freed and this results in the death of the cat. So, it can be seen that superimposition can be visualised as a state that simultaneously has multiple properties that conflict with each other,
