The envelope of gases surrounding earth is called the atmosphere. It is divided into five different layers i.e. Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere and Exosphere.
Troposphere has the following important properties.
It is the lowest level of earth’s atmosphere which extends from the surface of the earth upto 7 to 20km. This layer has all the water vapour and hence clouds form in this layer. We humans also live in this layer of the atmosphere.

Stratosphere is the second layer of atmosphere which extends from the base of the troposphere upto 50km height. Most flights fly in this layer since it provides a stable pressure and strong horizontal winds. Ozone is found in this layer.
The Mesosphere is found above the stratosphere. It starts at a height of 50km from earth’s surface and extends upto 85km. Temperature drops with increase in altitude in this layer and hence it is the coldest region of the atmosphere. Meteors are found in this region.
Thermosphere is the layer of atmosphere above the mesosphere. It extends upto 400km from the outer boundary of the mesosphere. In this layer temperature increases with increase in altitude. Aurora and satellites are found in this layer.

Note: Out of all the five layers of atmosphere, the troposphere is the first one and most living organisms are found in this layer. Water vapours also reach till this height and form clouds.
