Following are some of the important characteristics of organic farming:

It promotes biodiversity, that is, an increase in the number of species due to better environmental conditions. Therefore, improves the quality of an ecosystem.
Organic farming enhances the fertility of soil by circulating and restoration of nutrients in the soil, thus, reducing chances of natural disasters such as drought, famines, etc.
Organic farming promotes maximum consumption of natural resources that adds on to the quality of the food produced.
Besides, Organic farming is a practice that involves a lot of labour work that leads to increase in employment. Therefore, it is a potential source of a rising economy.
However, there are also some disadvantages of organic farming due to which it is still not that popular amongst indian farmers. Following are discussed few if them:
Organic vegetables and crops are quite expensive due to which are often ignored by customers leading farmers in severe loss.
Organic produce is comparatively lesser than the yielding capacity of conventional farming methods. Therefore, heavy investment and low production often leaves farmers in acute loss.

Conventional farming methods are those methods in which farmers use different kinds of pesticides, insecticides and chemicals to enhance their soil and crop quality. However, such an approach decreases nutrient content of food. Therefore, is being planned to be substituted by organic farming.
