The biosphere is described as virtually a closed system with regards to matter, having minimal inputs as well as outputs. Experimental biospheres, also known as closed ecological systems, have been made in order to study ecosystems as well as the potential for supporting life existing outside the Earth. These include spacecraft and some terrestrial laboratories.
