Hint: In this above question we will understand thermal contraction and types of thermal contraction and some points at the end. And temperature modifies the physical properties of compounds on a different level for each substance, but temperature variations cause substances to expand or contract. This is because of their atomic energy levels.

Complete answer:
When the temperature gets decreased, then the volume of the material also gets decreased. In general, this is called thermal contraction. We can describe thermal contraction as the fractional change in volume or length per unit change in the temperature. In the case of a solid contraction, normally, the linear contraction coefficient is employed.

In solid thermal contraction, it is expressed in terms of change in height, thickness, and length. However, for both liquid and gas, the volume contraction coefficient is more useful. And in general, volume change is referred to in fluid.
Types of contraction: Total three types of contraction,
Linear Contraction: The linear contraction is described as the decrease in the length of the solid.
Volume contraction: The volume contraction is described as the decrease in the volume of the solid on cooling.
Area or Superficial contraction: The Area or Superficial contraction is described as a decrease in surface area of the solid on cooling.

Note: Many common materials can be altered by the adsorption or desorption of water or other solvents; many organic materials change far more as a result of this phenomenon than thermal contraction. The molecules move less rapidly when the kinetic energy or the temperature of an object decreases. This is the reason why the moves close together and results in objects contraction.
