Complete Step by Step answer: The largest peninsular river is Godavari. It is also known as Dakshin Ganga because it is also the second largest flowing river after Ganga. Godavari makes its mark on Hindu scriptures and has been made from ancient times as well. It originates from the western ghats near Nasik, a city in Maharashtra, and flows into the Bay of Bengal. It starts off by flowing eastwards to the Deccan region and then turns towards the south-east region. It also splits into two distributaries before flowing into the Bay of Bengal in the east. The Godavari has a coverage area of 312,812 km2 (120,777 sq mi). This cover area is nearly one-tenth of the total area of India. Prabhita is the largest tributary of river Godavari. There are in total 7 principal tributaries however, there are also other small ones too but their significance is not that much.
