Vessels are conducting tissue found in the xylem. The walls of these vessels are lignified. The thickenings are of different shape like annular, scalariform, spiral and reticulate. The vessels may be drum shaped and have large diameter. Perforations are the small opening present in these vessels. The perforation may be single or multiple. These vessels are formed by the fusion of the walls of cells.
Endodermis- endodermis is a one layer thick structure which separates the cortex from the stele.
Its cells are barrel shaped and do not have intercellular spaces. These are living cells which contain starch. The endodermis serves as a protective layer.
The radial and the tangential walls of the endodermal cells contain thickenings of suberin, lignin and cutin. These are present in strips and bands. These are known as casparian bands and casparian strips. The endodermis is the feature of the roots. The thin walled cells of the endodermis are known as passage cells.
Xylem fibres- Xylem fibres are also known as wood fibres. They are lignified and provide mechanical support to the plant.
Vascular rays- These are the horizontal system of secondary tissue. These are responsible for the radial conduction of water and food to various parts.
