Hint: The levels of gonadotropin hormone in the body shows surge during puberty, and thus are released by Gonadotropic cells present within a gland called Pituitary. The placenta is also responsible for secretion of certain gonadotrophic hormones.
Complete answer:
Gonadotropin hormone, also known as sex hormone is responsible for stimulation of gonads, which are commonly referred as the sex glands. This hormone thus influences the reproductive function in humans. Gonadotropin hormones include luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), produced by anterior part of the pituitary gland (or master gland). Cells responsible for secreting LH & FSH are called gonadotrophs.
LH and FSH, both are composed of large glycosylated proteins containing identical alpha subunits and different beta subunits. They stimulate physiological changes in the ovaries of females, and on the testes in males.
LH helps in synthesis and secretion of primary sex hormone in males by binding to the leydig cells. On the other hand, FSH helps in sperm maturation by providing functional support to Sertoli cells present in the testes.
In the female body, LH is responsible for formation of the corpus luteum. Like LH, FSH also shows rapid increase during the preovulatory period, and stimulates ovulation as it is responsible for maturation as well as the release of ovum.
Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) is normally secreted in pregnant females by the placenta. This steroid hormone triggers corpus luteum to release another hormone called progesterone. It also stimulates secretion of steroidal components from gonads of developing fetus.
Lactogenic hormone is commonly referred to as prolactin. It is also secreted by the anterior pituitary in order to stimulate the milk secretion in mothers for breast-feeding the newly born at the desired time.
Note:
Gonadotropins or gonadotrophic hormones contribute to development of secondary sexual characteristics in males as well as females. As LH level rises, it causes an increase in the levels of testosterone, estrogen and progesterone. In a similar way, FSH also follows the same pattern with few variations.
