Hint: (i) Teflon is one the most important by process of addition polymerisation and it has a regular linear structure.
(ii)Buna-N is one of widely used synthetic rubber. It is obtained by copolymerisation of two types of monomers.
Complete step by step solution:
Polymers are giant molecules made by a number of one or more repeating units called monomers. The number of repeating units will generally be lesser than 100. The polymers made by only one type of monomers are called homopolymers whereas the polymers made by two or more types of monomers are called copolymers. Polymerisation is the process of formation of polymers from monomers. Copolymerisation is the process of formation of polymers from two different monomers.
(i) Teflon
Teflon is also known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It is manufactured by heating tetrafluoroethene with free radical or persulfate catalyst at high pressure.
Preparation of Teflon:
Step 1: Firstly, Tetrafluoroethene is obtained by pyrolysis of chlorodifluoromethane
Step 2: Tetrafluoroethene heated with free radical to give Teflon
Teflon coating undergoes decomposition at temperatures above. The chains are held together by Van der waals force of attraction.
Thus the monomer used for getting Teflon is tetrafluoroethene.
(ii) Buna-N
Buna-N is the synthetic rubber which is obtained by copolymerization of 1,3-butadiene and acrylonitrile in presence catalyst such as peroxides.
It is also one of elastomers which can be stretched just like a rubber and will be back to its normal when it is released.
The monomers used to obtain Buna-N are 1,3-butadiene and acrylonitrile.
Note: Teflon is used as coating of pipes etc. because of inert nature and its resistance towards corrosion. Buna-N is elastomer which can be stretched and on releasing it will be back to normal . Buna-N is widely used adhesives, rubber belts, gaskets, roll covers etc.
