-A test tube containing KOH solution is tied with thread and hung inside the conical flask and then the cork is fixed in the flask with the shorter end of the glass tube inserted in it.
-The conical flask is made airtight by the application of Vaseline on its rim.
-Then the beaker is taken with colored water and the longer and of the glass tube is dipped inside it.
-now the initial level of water is marked in the glass tube. Then the complete setup is set aside.
-After an hour the final observation is taken without disturbing the apparatus. It is observed that the water level rises in the bent tube.
Note: The rise in the level of water in the glass tube indicates that carbon dioxide is produced by germinating seeds during respiration. Here carbon dioxide release or produced by the seed is absorbed by a potassium hydroxide solution this creates a vacuum in the flask and the air present in the bent tube moves into the conical flask that pulls the water in the bent tube further up.
