What are the Measures of Central Tendency?

It is a statistical term and is used for a probability distribution. It is also considered to be the centre of the distribution process. The equations dealing with the measures of central tendency are often compared with the equation process of finding out the average. In short, the measures of central tendency denote that particular number or position that is at the centre of a long chain of numerical values.

What do the Students Need to Learn about the Measures of Central Tendency?

The students are provided with a series of numbers that denote the distribution of data and they are asked to find out the mode, mean and median. It is time to discuss the simple methods to calculate these three measures in simple steps.

Methods to Calculate

Mode: To find out the mode, the students need to identify that one particular number that occurs most frequently in a series of numbers.

Median: It is very easy to calculate the median and all you have to do is to identify the central number in a series of numbers. Let me give you an example. Suppose you are provided with a number series consisting of five numbers and they are 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7. In this case, the median will be 4 as it is the central number in this number series.

Mean: To calculate the mean, you need to add the numbers presented in a number series and divide the sum by the total number of data you are presented with. It is equivalent to calculating the average. If there are 3 numbers in a series and they are 3, 5, 7, then the mean will be (3+5+7)=15 divided by 3 as there are three numbers in this series and the answer will be 5.

FAQs on RD Sharma Class 9 Solutions Chapter 24 - Measures of Central Tendency (Ex 24.4) Exercise 24.4

1. Are there any specific measures of central tendency?

There are four measures of central tendency. Since the measures of central tendency are associated with the concept of statistical representation of a number system, the different measures can be compared with the various ranges that can be presented with the help of a number system.

The four measures are known as mode, median, mean and midrange. It should be noted here that the mid and the mid-extreme range presented by the statistical representation of certain data values is comparable with the maximum and minimum values presented by the arithmetic number system.

2. Do the measures of central tendency help people in certain calculation processes?

The concept of the measures of central tendency is associated with the statistical representation of data values that is otherwise difficult to be presented with the help of a number system. We all know that presenting a concept is easier with graphical images, pie and bar charts.

We need to take the help of the methods to present our data through statistical representation when there is a lot of data that needs to be taken into account for initiating the calculation process. The concept of central tendency is unique because it narrows down the quantity of data and presents them briefly for making the comparative studies easier.

3. Is understanding the concept of central tendency important?

Understanding topics or subject matters that are difficult to understand should be introduced to the students at an early age and that is why chapter 24 is included in the syllabus of the students preparing for the class 9 examination.

The CBSE board is highly popular for designing the courses in such a way that help the students to pursue their higher academic careers. Understanding the concept of central tendency will prove to be highly beneficial for those students who want to pursue their higher studies in Statistics or want to pursue a course in data science.

4. Does the concept of central tendency play a very important role in undertaking research?

Since undertaking research is quite a complicated process that involves innumerable data and the task becomes more difficult when the researchers need to take several pieces of information into account for conducting their research.

The different measures of central tendency represent the graphical and statistical representation of numerics in an easy to understand manner and the different measures signify the different ranges of the numeric values. The measures of central tendency help the researchers to find out the location of the position of central value in a chain of data distribution.

5. Do the mentors provide the students with printable study materials?

The teachers at Vedantu are quite aware of the fact that the students need special attention when it comes to understanding and learning a new concept that is completely new to them and they are not familiar with a single factor involved in the process of learning.

To make the learning process easier, various study materials are available on the website of Vedantu that are provided to the students in exchange for no cost. They can download the documents and print them at their convenience so that they can easily access all the information at the time of their need.
