• प्रस्तुत कहानी में एक कंजूस व्यक्ति, भीखूभाई का चित्रण किया गया है। एक दिन भीखूभाई का नारियल खाने का मन हुआ, लेकिन घर में एक भी नारियल नहीं था। उन्होंने अपनी पत्नी लाभुबेन से नारियल की बात की, तो उन्होंने बाजार से नारियल लाने को कहा। भीखूभाई न तो बाजार जाना चाहते थे और न ही पैसे खर्च करना।

• इसके बाद, वे सीधे खेत में एक बूढ़े बरगद के नीचे बैठ गए और सोचने लगे कि वे बाजार जाकर नारियल का दाम पूछकर आएंगे। वे आखिरकार बाजार गए और वहाँ नारियल वाले से दाम पूछा। 

• नारियल वाले ने एक नारियल का दाम दो रुपये बताया, जो भीखूभाई को बहुत ज्यादा लगा। उन्होंने सस्ते नारियल के बारे में पूछा, तो नारियल वाले ने मंडी में सस्ते नारियल मिलने की बात कही। भीखूभाई तुरंत मंडी की ओर चल पड़े।

• मंडी में बहुत शोरगुल था। वहाँ भीखूभाई को नारियल वाला दिखाई दिया। जब उन्होंने उससे दाम पूछा, तो उसने एक नारियल का दाम एक रुपया बताया। 

• भीखूभाई ने पचास पैसे देकर नारियल उठा लिया, लेकिन नारियल वाले ने नारियल वापस ले लिया और कहा कि बंदरगाह पर पचास पैसे में नारियल मिल जाएगा।

• भीखूभाई फिर सागर के किनारे पहुंचे और वहाँ एक नाव वाले से नारियल का दाम पूछा। नाव वाले ने कहा कि पचास पैसे में नारियल मिल जाएगा। 

• भीखूभाई ने थकान का हवाला देते हुए उसे पच्चीस पैसे में देने को कहा। नाव वाले ने उन्हें नारियल के बगीचे में जाने की सलाह दी।

• भीखूभाई नारियल के बगीचे में गए और माली से दाम पूछा। माली ने कहा कि पच्चीस पैसे में नारियल मिल जाएगा। भीखूभाई ने थकान का हवाला देते हुए माली से एक नारियल मुफ़्त में देने को कहा। माली ने कहा कि अगर मुफ्त में नारियल चाहिए तो पेड़ पर चढ़कर जितने चाहो, तोड़ लो।

• भीखूभाई खुश हो गए और पेड़ पर चढ़ने लगे। जैसे ही उन्होंने सबसे बड़े नारियल को तोड़ने के लिए दोनों हाथों को आगे बढ़ाया, उनके पैर फिसल गए और वे नारियल को पकड़कर लटक गए।

• उसी समय एक आदमी ऊँट पर सवार वहाँ से गुजर रहा था। भीखूभाई ने उससे मदद मांगी, और वह तैयार हो गया। लेकिन जैसे ही उसने मदद करने की कोशिश की, ऊँट ने हरे-हरे पत्तों के लालच में गर्दन झुका ली और अपनी जगह से हट गया। इससे आदमी ने अपनी जान बचाने के लिए भीखूभाई के पैरों को कसकर पकड़ लिया।

• फिर, एक घुड़सवार वहाँ आया और मदद करने के लिए तैयार हो गया, लेकिन घोड़े ने हरी घास की तरफ कदम बढ़ा दिए। घुड़सवार ने ऊँटवाले के पैरों को पकड़ लिया। अब तीनों लोग नारियल के पेड़ से झूल रहे थे।

• घुड़सवार ने भीखूभाई से कहा कि वे कसकर पकड़ें और उन्होंने सौ रुपए देने की पेशकश की। ऊँटवाले ने भी दो सौ रुपए देने की बात कही। पैसों की बात सुनते ही भीखूभाई ने अपनी बाहें फैला दीं, जिससे घुड़सवार, ऊँटवाला और भीखूभाई तीनों धड़ाम से जमीन पर गिर पड़े।
