‘Concept of Area and Perimeter’ is Chapter 21 of Class 6 mathematics. Area and perimeter, in Mathematics, are two of the most important properties of two-dimensional shapes. The perimeter can be defined as the distance of the boundary of a shape, on the other hand, the area can be defined as the region occupied by the shape or enclosed within its boundary. Area and Perimeter is one of the most fundamental topics in Mathematics, which is used in our day to day life.

The concept of Area and Perimeter applies to any shape and size whether it is regular or irregular. There are various kinds of shapes in math such as circle, triangle, square, rectangle etc and each of these shapes has its formula of area and perimeter.  Every shape has its area and perimeter formula.

As we know that area is a region covered by a shape and perimeter is the distance of the boundary around the shape. Suppose If you want to paint the gates of your home on Diwali, you need to know the area (and size) of the gates to calculate the quantity of paint required and cost for the same.

To understand this better, let us assume you want to fence the garden in your house, the length of the wire that is required for fencing is the perimeter of the garden. If it’s a square garden with each side as 10 meters then the perimeter would be 40 meters. The area is the space contained within the boundary of a given figure. It is calculated in square units.
