Brief of a Royal Thief Catcher Summary in English

The story is about the life of a Brahman, an ascetic - somebody who has chosen a life away from human pleasure, a holy man - who comes to a kingdom named Sravasti. There, he lives as a guru or a swami and is respected, adored and appreciated by the people. Soon, they began to offer him money, jewels and items of great value.

The Brahman started to become selfish as he collected all his treasures and buried them deep into the nearby forest instead of using them for the better good. Every day he would come and admire the jewels until one day, he was shocked to find them missing. He became very distressed and heartbroken and became vengeful.

This news soon reached king Prasnajit. He promised the brahman that he would get his treasures back and, in the meantime, rest temporarily at a rich merchant’s house where he is to be sheltered and looked after. The king then faked his illness and asked the doctors about the patients they had been treating.

One doctor said that one of his patients was a seriously ill merchant, and he had asked him to get a plant from the forest to cure him. The King immediately summoned the ill merchant who had told the servant to get the plant, and the king, in turn, demanded the presence of the servant.

When the servant arrived, he immediately confessed his crimes and begged for mercy, but the king only asked that he bring back what he had stolen. The servant agreed and set out to get it back. He had taken the treasures and buried them further into the forest, so it took him a lot of effort to drag them before and was able to return to the palace by evening. To his surprise, the king asked him to return to his home and vowed never to steal again.

The Brahman was overjoyed to be reunited with his treasure but was disappointed when he knew that the king had asked him to make good use of the money and that the thief would not be punished. King Prasnajit gave no room for arguments and requested the Brahman to leave, which he did so reluctantly, and there have been no signs of his whereabouts ever since.

A Royal Thief Catcher Moral

There can be more than one moral in this story, as the actions of the Brahman teach us to give at least a bit of our money to charity and to not be selfish by keeping it all for ourselves. The King’s decision tells us that one can use intelligence to help others and that you must always be kind to the people around you and forgive them if necessary.

The servant’s actions, in turn, let us know that he committed the crime not because he wanted to but only because he had to, and after he had returned the treasure, he promised never to steal ever again. Likewise, children will also learn when to use their intelligence, kindness and forgiveness. So, this was A Royal Thief Catcher's moral.
