About Andal

In the southern regions of India, the Tamil poet Andal from the tenth century is regarded as a saint. In fact, she is the only woman to be honoured as a Vaishnavite Alvar (saint), one of the religion's twelve saints (a cult devoted to Lord Vishnu). The Divine Consort of Sriman Narayana, Sri Bhumi Devi, is thought to have been an incarnation of her as well (a manifestation of Lord Vishnu). Throughout the month of Margazhi, worshippers continue to recite Andal Thiruppavai, her collection of devotional poems.

Story of Andal in English

According to the biography of Andal, a man by the name of Vishnucitta discovered the infant Andal in the Srivilliputtur temple garden under a tulsi plant. Goda, which translates to "the gift of Earth," was the name he gave her. She was raised by Vishnucitta in a loving and devoted environment. She decided to wed Sri Ranganatha, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, as her devotion and love for the Lord grew so strong.

As she matured, so did her resolve to wed Lord Ranganatha. She also began presenting the Lord with a special offering. She used to first put on a flower crown for herself before giving it to God. She explained, saying that she first wanted to wear the garland and check herself in the mirror to see if it looked okay or not. She didn't offer the garland to God until she was sure it looked lovely.

The Lord reportedly appeared to Vishnucitta in a vision that evening and informed him that He wholeheartedly embraced Goda's offerings. Since that time, Goda has been referred to as "Andal," the young woman who "controlled" the Lord.

Her father once caught her doing this and warned her against doing it again. For the Lord, Goda created a fresh garland. Andal's father proposed marriage to her when she turned 15 and was legally permitted to do so. She responded by stating that she would only wed Sri Ranganatha.

After this occurrence, it is thought that Vishnucitta saw the Lord once again in a divine vision, telling him to send Andal to the Sri Ranganatha Temple. The Lord instructed the priests at Sri Ranganatha Temple in a vision at the same time to make preparations for the wedding. It is stated that Andal married the Lord once she arrived at the Sri Ranganatha Temple.
