Joringel and Jorinda

"Jorinde and Joringel," a German fairy tale, was collected by The Brothers Grimm. The narrative is almost exclusively recorded in German, except for a Swedish translation; nevertheless, The story is known as "Joringel and Jorinda" in several English translations. In this tale, we learn that an ancient fairy formerly resided in an old castle that was situated in the heart of a deep and gloomy forest. She walked about the countryside like a cat or fluttered around like an owl all day. She frequently changed into her elderly self at night. We will read the whole story in the upcoming part.

Once upon a time, there was an old castle in the middle of a dark and deep forest, and an old fairy lived in the castle. Now, this fairy could take any shape she wanted.All day she flew around in the form of an owl or crawled through the countryside like a cat.

But at night, she kept turning into her old woman.

When the young man approached within 100 yards of her castle, he became so stiff that he could not move a step until she came and released him.

Things she won't do until he gives her his promise not to go there again.

But when a pretty girl entered that room, she turned into her bird, and her fairies put her in her cage and hung her in a room in her castle.  700 cages were hanging in the castle, all of which contained beautiful birds.

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Yorinda. She was prettier than any pretty girl you've ever seen, and a shepherd boy named Jorindel liked her so much that they soon got married. I went for a walk in the forest on Jorindel and said, "You must be careful not to get too close to the fairy castle.

"The last rays of the setting sun shone brightly through the long trunks of the trees into the green undergrowth below, and lovers sang from the tall birches.

Jolinda sat down and looked at the sun. Jorindel sat beside her. We were both sad because we didn't know why. But it seemed as though they were parting forever. They wandered far. And when they saw the way home, they didn't know which way to go.

The sun was setting rapidly, and already the semicircle was behind the hill. Jorindel suddenly turned behind her and saw that she had unknowingly sat under the old wall of the church castle through the bushes. Then he flinched, turned pale, and trembled with fear.

Jorinda was singing

"A wild pigeon was singing from the spray of the willow

Hello! Good day!

He was mourning the fate of his beloved companion

Well done! When Jorindel turned around to see why, she saw his Jorinda transform into a nightingale, so her song ended with a sad jug, jug.

An owl with fiery eyes flew around them three times and hooted three times. Oh!

Jorindel couldn't move. He stood firm as a stone, unable to cry, speak, or move a limb. And now the sun has completely set. A dark night has come. The owl flew into the bush. After a while, an old fairy came out with his face pale and thin. His eyes stared, and his nose and chin almost met.

She muttered something under her breath, grabbed her nightingale, held it in her hand and walked away. Poor Jorindel saw the Nightingale gone - but what could he do? He couldn't speak, he couldn't move from where he stood. Finally, the Fairy came back and sang in a hoarse voice:

'Till the prisoner is healed,

And her fate is thrown out,

Stay! Oh, stay!

When the spell surrounds them,

And when the spell binds them,

Get lost!

Finding the Joringel

Suddenly, Jorindel was released. He then knelt down before the fairy and asked him to return his beloved Jolinda. But she laughed at him and said he would never see her again. Then she went on her way.

He prayed, wept, and mourned, all in vain.

"Oh, what will happen?"

Unable to return to his hometown, he went to a strange village to raise sheep. Many times he ventured closer to the hated castle, all in vain. He didn't hear or see anything from Yorinda.

Finally, one night he dreamed that he found a beautiful purple flower and that a pearl of great price was lying in it. And he picked the flower and went with it to the castle, and all who touched it were disillusioned, where he dreamed of finding Yorinda again.

When he woke in the morning, he began looking for this beautiful flower across the hills and valleys. And in vain were the eight long days he sought it. But early in the morning of the ninth day, he found a beautiful purple flower. In the middle was a great dew, the size of a pearl of great price. Then he picked flowers and set off, wandering day and night until he came to the castle again.

Witch

He approached her at over 100 paces but did not stop as he did in front of her and managed to get very close to her door. Jorindel was really happy to see this. Then he touched the door with flowers. He walked through the garden and heard many birds chirping.

Joringel and Jorinda Summary

Depending on the translation, a wicked shape-shifting witch (or "fairy") resided alone in a foreboding castle in the woods. She could entice birds and wild animals to her before murdering them. Any male who dared approach where she stood was frozen to stone, and she converted helpless maidens into birds and imprisoned them. Two lovers who were engaged to be married, Jorinde and Joringel, went for a stroll in the woods. They were too close to the witch's hiding place. She transformed Jorinde into a nightingale and rendered Jorinde completely immobile. Joringel was let free once the bird was taken away, and she laughed that he would never see Jorinde again.

Joringel had a dream one night that a flower would remove the witch's spell completely. After nine days of searching, he located it and returned it to the castle. When he arrived at the castle, and all the doors opened, he wasn't paralysed to the ground. The witch was seen by him feeding the birds. She couldn't scold him. He recognised Jorinde when she attempted to remove one of the cages. The witch's terrible spell vanished from her forever when he touched her with the flower. With just a touch of the flower, Jorinde was transformed back into a lady. The rest of the women were then converted back.
