Kalyani’s Devotion

The tale of Kalyani and the Goddess Shukra is a well-known children's mythological fairytale in English literature. The main character is Kalyani, an old woman who is Gauri's mother-in-law. The Kalyani worshipped Shukra. As Kalyani is a devoted person and Gauri is not, they both have contrasting personalities. Gauri once received a request from Kalyani to watch over the Shukra idol while she was gone.

Despite not being religious, Gauri agreed since she needed to spend a few days away from her mother-in-law. All of the prosperity left their house due to her mistreatment of the idol, which she even tossed away. Kalyani asked about the idol when she got home. Kalyani finally managed to get it home, where she started adoring it once more. Let’s learn the whole story.

The Story of Kalyani Who Worshipped Shukra 

Kalyani was an elderly lady who worshipped Shukra and fasted on Fridays. She would delicately bathe Shukra's idol with holy water and provide the best meals. She had once expressed a strong desire to embark on a large-scale pilgrimage. She requested that her daughter-in-law, Gauri, watch after the idol while she was away. Gauri was not religious, but she agreed since she needed a few days away from her mother-in-law.

Gauri would not fast on Fridays while Kalyani was gone. She would give the idol a holy bath by sprinkling water on it. She would offer leftover crumbs to the idol in place of nice food. Gauri eventually disposed of the statue in the trash. When a neighbour discovered it, she politely brought the idol home.

She began to worship it and began Friday fasting. The neighbour quickly grew to be very wealthy. However, wealth had departed from Gauri's home. When Kalyani came back, she enquired about the idol from Gauri as she was shocked to see it gone from her house. Gauri informed her that she had thrown it away.

Kalyani was concerned and went searching for it in the area. She eventually found the rich lady's home after spending hours wandering about and seeking. When she inquired about the idol, the rich lady acknowledged that she had taken Shukra's idol home with her after finding it in the trash. When the rich lady discovered that Kalyana was the owner of the idol, she became enraged and confronted her. She asked, "How could you throw it in the garbage; you have no respect for God?"

After explaining her circumstances to the rich lady, Kalyani apologised and asked if she might return the goddess's idol to her. Kalyani’s devotion won as the rich lady returned the idol without hesitation. Kalyani happily brought it home and began worshipping it once more. Soon after, prosperity returned to her family, and Gauri realised her mistake.

This well-known mythological tale instructs us to always be truthful with God and to never have ill will against him. God is omniscient and moral; those who truly believe in him will get enormous rewards, while those who do not will endure harsh punishment.
