A Fox, a Rabbit, a Monkey, and a Beggar Standing by the Fire

A Fox, a Rabbit, a Monkey, and a Beggar Standing by the Fire

The Fox, The Rabbit, and the Monkey

A very long time ago, a man on the moon was looking back at Earth to see what was happening there. When he looked at the sea, he saw dolphins playing with the waves and penguins rolling by their bellies on the ice. The sight was very pleasing to him. Then he decided to take a look at the forest. There, the man saw a red-tailed fox, a white furry rabbit, and a monkey sitting in front of a fire. The monkey was jumping around his friends and watching that, the man on the moon was clearly amazed. He thought to himself “What a funny monkey. He cannot even sit still around his friend”. Looking at them, the man decided that the monkey was the funniest animal in the forest.

Who is the Kindest Animal?

After finding out about the funniest animal on the planet, the man wanted to find the kindest animal as well. That choice was difficult since the man didn’t know about these animals. He then started wondering “The fox is pretty clever, the money is very funny, and the rabbit is fast. But who is the kindest of them all?” So, to find the answer to this question, he decided to visit Earth and test the animals on his own.

The Test Begins

The next day, the man on the moon disguised himself as a beggar and went to the Earth. He presented himself to the three animals and asked for some food. He said, “I am very hungry, please. Can you find me something that I can eat?”

Hearing the plea of the beggar, the monkey felt very sorry for him and rushed to find some food in the forest. On his way, he found a large leaf and made a pouch with that. He then filled up the pouch with all sorts of nuts and fruits. He then came back to the beggar and gave the pouch to him. The beggar smiled and was very impressed with the monkey. He said, “This is wonderful. Surely you are the kindest of all animals in the forest.” The fox then replied, “Wait, I have a fish for you. You can cook the fish and eat its delicious meat.” He even cooked the fish for the beggar. Seeing this, the beggar replied, “Surely you are the kindest of all animals”.

What Did the Rabbit Do?

The rabbit saw what the fox and the monkey did. He then said, “I cannot provide you with anything which is as delicious as the fish cooked by the fox or as nutritious as the fruits that my friend, the monkey has got. But one thing I know is that you will definitely enjoy the taste of freshly cooked rabbit meat.” Saying that the rabbit jumped into the fire. The beggar, the fox, and the monkey cried for the rabbit to stop. Then the beggar reached into the fire and pulled the rabbit out. Finally, the beggar revealed himself.

Rabbit on the Moon

The fox, the rabbit, and the monkey were surprised to find the man from the moon in front of them. The man then told them how he was looking for the animal which was the kindest in the forest. He said, “I know for sure now that the kindest animal is no one other than the rabbit.” When the fox and the monkey questioned his decision, he had a very beautiful answer. The man said that the gifts of both the fox and the monkey were very good, but only the rabbit was prepared to sacrifice everything, even his own life, for the man. He was impressed with the kindness shown by the rabbit. He took the rabbit with him to the moon where he lived all his life with the man. The story teaches us that kindness is rewarded in the most wonderful ways.
