An Introduction to Long Riddles for Kids

Riddles are small questions or long phrases that have logical or creative answers/meaning. Riddles are also known as puzzles. There are many riddles puzzles for kids which need logical and critical thinking to figure out the answers. Now that we know riddles are also known as puzzles there are two types of riddles.


First one is Enigma, enigma riddles are riddles that involve metaphorical devices and require good critical thinking ability on the reader's part. Second one is Conundrum, conundrum riddles usually involve puns and jokes, they are more fun to solve. All these riddles contribute greatly in developing a strong thinking ability in kids.

The Origin of Riddles and Puzzles

Kids brain-teasing puzzles and riddles are fun, and children love to challenge themselves by solving them. With riddle solving habits they can even make their own puzzles and riddles. Riddles were first discovered 4,000 years ago. Initially they were written in ancient Sumerians language called Cuneiform.


One of the very first riddles is from the 5th century BC. We all know that riddles are a form of multiple puzzles combined together, but let us now see the literal meaning of the word riddle. Word 'riddle' and 'read' have the same origin; they both come from the common German verb rēdana which means to guess. Hence, riddles are questions or short stories that are needed to be interpreted or guessed.

Riddle 1: 

Your grandfather went on a walk, after a few minutes it started raining. He was not carrying an umbrella or a hat. All his clothes were drenched in rain once he came back but not a single strand of his hair how?

How Can Students Easily Solve Riddles for Kids?

Solving riddles are fun and easy if kids pay attention to the details of the wordplay. Therefore, here are few tricks which children and use to solve any riddle easily: 

  • First try to identify whether the riddle is metaphorical or conundrum.

  • Try reading more and more short riddle books.

  • Don't just directly jump onto finding the answer. Read the riddle 4-5 times carefully; the answer is always in the question. 

  • Riddles usually deals with familiar topics; therefore, kids can easily associate a pattern to help them answer the puzzle.

Reading and asking riddles can make up for a great quality time with your kids. Parents can indulge in asking short and long story riddles to their kids. It is a great way to improve their logical and analytical abilities. Riddles also force kids to boost their imagination and empower their mental maths skills.
