Summary

Mira Behn Aur Bagh is a short story that describes Mira Behn who was born and raised in England but chose to live in India and practise Non-violence. Mahatma Gandhi was her inspiration.

She supported the concept of non-violence and left her family to start working with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Post Independence, she lived in a small hill village in Uttar Pradesh named Gopal Ashram. She dedicated her life to animal service.

Due to increasing deforestation and urbanisation, the animals in a jungle nearby their village started to move to the village from the jungle.

One day, a tiger from the jungle attacked a cow in the village.

People there panicked and this incident threatened the Nagavalli village on the outskirts of the forest.

People were worried about their lives as well as the lives of other domestic animals. They went to Mira Behn in Gopal Ashram and presented their problems.

The villagers decided to capture the tiger and they built a cage in which a goat was placed as bait.

When the tiger would enter the cage to attack the goat, the door of the cage would be closed.

The next morning, the villagers went to check if the tiger was trapped, but they saw the door of the cage to be closed without any animals inside it.

The villagers were surprised. However, Mira Behn explained to them that it was she who saved the goat that was supposed to be sacrificed for the well being of the villagers. She explained to them her love for animals and the need to protect them. This shows the immense love Mira Behn had for the animals in her strong belief in non-violence.
