Introduction to Prepositions.
Prepositions
Prepositions are used to connect words to those around them. Common prepositions include above, about, below, for, from, inside, into, of, to, until, and with. There are a lot more. Prepositions are frequently used before words to indicate where or when something is. They convey the positions of the noun in a sentence.
Examples:
1. I will not speak in between their argument.
2. Sam forgot his jacket at home.
3. He placed his bag under the table.
4. Your spectacles are placed by the bedside table.
Types of prepositions
Types of prepositions
Prepositions denote additional amorphous forms of interactions, such as relationships in time, place, and location.
1. Time
Prepositions are words that come before a noun or pronoun and indicate how one word is related to another. A preposition of time can be used to describe events that take place all at once or over a long period of time. Prepositions such as at, on, in, before, since, till, during, by, from, after etc. are simple examples. They are employed to aid signals when something occurred, is about to occur, or will happen. But because there are so many prepositions that can be employed, it can get quite perplexing.
Examples of prepositions of time are highlighted in the phrases below for convenience. For instance:
I was born on June 16th, 2005
I was born in 1990.
I was born at exactly 6 pm.
With three separate prepositions being utilized to express when something occurred, the aforementioned makes it appear pretty challenging. However, some rules can assist in selecting the appropriate preposition:
Use the preposition for years, months, seasons, centuries, and times of day:
In 1987, I first met John.
January is always a chilly month.
Every year, Easter falls in the spring.
Use the preposition when referring to days, dates, and particular holidays:
On Mondays, we attend school, but not on Sundays.
The 25th of December is Christmas.
On my birthday, buy me something.
Use the preposition at for dates, indications of exception, and festivals:
Families frequently fight during the holidays.
At night, I produce more.
Her shift ended at 7 o'clock.
2. Prepositions of Place
Prepositions of place describe how one thing or person is situated in respect to another. You can direct someone to a certain location by using prepositions of place. The most frequent prepositions to express position are above, on, on top of, beneath, underneath, below, under, in front of, behind, next to, between, beside, near, close to, within, inside, outside, out of, out, on, at, in etc.
Some examples mentioned above might be confusing because they are also the most frequent prepositions to indicate time like in, on, and at. However, because location prepositions are a more rigorous idea than time prepositions, utilization in a sentence will make it clearer.
Examples of prepositions of place are highlighted in the following sentences for convenience.
We can meet up at the intersection.
When referring to something with a surface, the word "on" is used:
On the wall, the sculpture is hung.
There are pictures on the page.
The menu, which is on the table, includes the specials.
When referring to something that is inside or inside constrained boundaries, the word "in" is used. Anything may fit here, even a nation:
The container of whiskey is in the refrigerator.
In the garden, the girls had fun.
When referring to anything at a certain location, the word at is used:
At the intersection of Water and High streets, he stood at the bus stop.
We'll get together at the airport.
Numerous more place-related prepositions are used in English, including beneath, over, within, outside, above, and below. However, since they refer to concrete positions rather than abstract ones, there is a lot less ambiguity.
Under the table, there is a cat.
The automobile has locked the key inside.
They left the home and went outside.
3. Prepositions of Direction
Prepositions of movement are simpler to comprehend than prepositions of place and time because they are less abstract. Prepositions of direction provide information about how one item or person moves or is directed in reference to other things or people. To describes movement from one place to another. Some of the examples are to, through, towards, into, across, over etc. The prepositions of movement are highlighted in the following sentences to make them simple to spot.
He has travelled to France on vacation.
Don’t put clean clothes into the washing machine again.
When I'm exhausted, I'll go to bed.
She helped her friend push the desk towards the door.
