1. What was Shepard's financial situation?

Ans: The financial condition of the Shepard was not very sound. He didn't even have his own modest cottage. He had never attended school and had never learned to read or write.

2. Was the Shepard educated and dumb?

Ans: No, Shepard was uneducated and did not go to school because there were very few schools at that time. Though he was uneducated he was very wise.

3. Did the Shepard help everyone and why?

Ans: The Shepard helped everyone because he can understand people's sorrows and troubles. He helped them to face their problems with courage and common sense.

4. Why did people come to the Shepard for advice?

Ans: The people came to the Shepard for advice because he was wise and could understand their problems. He was known for his wit and friendliness.

Ans: The king of the country when heard about the Shepard wanted to meet him. The king disguised himself like a Shepard and went to him. He also spends the night with Shepard and is impressed by his nature.

1. What did Shepard do on seeing a traveller?

Ans: The Shepard saw the traveller coming towards the cave, so he rose to welcome him. He then took the tired traveller inside the cave and offered him water and food to eat from his own meal. The traveller stayed in the cave for one night.

2. What was the king's reaction to this gesture of the Shepard?

Ans: The king was greatly impressed by Shepard’s hospitality and wise conversation. He woke up the next morning and thanks’ him for his kindness towards the traveller. The king was both surprised and pleased. While returning, the king thought to himself that the Shepard was indeed wise.

3. What happened after the king had left?

Ans: The king thought that he needed people like him to work for him. Shepard was then appointed as the governor of a small district.

4. Has being the governor changed Shepard's attitude?

Ans: No, although Shepard rose to power and dignity, he remains as humble as ever. People admired and adored him because of his intellect, compassion, and decency. He was kind and just to one and all. His reputation as a fair and knowledgeable governor quickly spread across the country.

5. What happened when the governors of other provinces came to know about the Shepard?

Ans:  When the governors of the other provinces learned about the Shepard, they became enraged and began lobbying the king against him. Some accused him to be a dishonest person while others pointed out that he kept all the money collected from taxes. Few also questioned about the iron chest that he kept with him. 

D. Long Answer Questions: 5 Marks

1. What were rumours spread by other governors about the Shepard? What was the king’s first reaction?

Ans: The other governors spread rumours about the Shepard that he was dishonest. Some claimed that he keeps some money from the tax paid by the people. Some questioned why he always carried an iron chest. Some claimed he must have a treasure which he was hiding under the chest. At first, the king did not give any attention but then it didn’t last long. Angrily he called the governor and asked him the reason for wearing an iron chest.

2. Could the king ignore every time people came to him complaining about the new governor? What did he do later?

Ans: No, the king could not ignore people who visit him for complaining about the new governor. One day, the king called the Shepard to the palace. The Shepard whom the king made the governor came riding on his camel. To everyone’s delight, the iron chest was behind the camelback. The king angrily questioned the governor why he always had an iron chest. To which, the governor asked his servant to bring an iron chest to him. Everyone was eager to see but there was an old blanket of his oldest friend.

3. When the king found out that the Shepard was an honest man even after being the governor, how did he reward him?

Ans:  When the king asked the reason behind always carrying this old blanket, the governor replied that the blanket was of his oldest friend. If the king took away his new cloaks, the blanket would protect him. The king, after hearing the reply, was pleased. He knew the Shepard was the humblest and the wisest man in the land. So, the king made him the governor of a much bigger district that very day. 

4. Describe the character of Shepard.

Ans: The Shepard was very poor and did not have a cottage even to call home. Though he was uneducated, he was wise and humble. He understood people’s sorrow and troubles.He helped others to face their problems and solved it with courage and common sense. When the king visited him, despite his poverty, he cordially attended the king and offered water and food from his own meal. When the king appointed him as a governor, he did not lose his humble nature and honesty. 

5. What is the moral of the story “The Shepard’s Treasure”?

Ans:  The story “The Shepard’s Treasure” tells us about a poor Shepard who lived in a village in Iran. He was not educated but he was wise and humble to everyone. Soon the story of his humbleness reached the king and impressed him. Thus the king appointed him as a governor of a small district. The moral of the story is “As you sow, so you reap” which means one’s behaviour reflects upon his life. Due to his humbleness, helping nature and honesty, Shepard was appointed as governor by the king himself.
