Full Form of CCTV

The CCTV full form is Closed - Circuit television cameras. The CCTV cameras introduced by Walter Bruch can obtain images or recordings for surveillance and other private purposes. Cameras can be of two types namely Video camera and Digital still camera. The main purpose of CCTV cameras is to capture light and transform it into a video signal. At the bottom of the CCTV camera is a CCD sensor (charged - couple device). The CCD transforms light into electrical signals and this electric signal into a video signal through signal processing that can be recorded or displayed on the screen.

What is the CCTV  Long Form?

The CCTV long form is Closed - Circuit television camera.

What is a CCTV Camera?

A closed-Circuit television camera, also known as video surveillance is a system that enables you to keep an eye on what's going on in and around your business. The camera and monitor enable you to view live events, and record archive footage for future use.

The term closed-circuit in CCTV means live-streams are usually conveyed to a limited (closed) number of monitors, unlike regular television which is broadcast to the public at large. CCTV cameras are generally used to detect and deter criminal activities and record traffic violations, but these cameras have other uses also.

In June 1927, the first mechanical CCTV system was introduced by Russian Physicist Leon Theremin. Siemens AG installed another early CCTV at Test Stand VII IN 1942 for observing the launch of V-2 rockets.

CCTV Security Camera Types

All CCTV cameras aim to capture footage. These cameras are especially important when your business is located in a high crime area or has a vulnerability around your buildings which people could exploit. However, in industrial areas, CCTV equipment may be used to observe parts of a process from a central control room, for example when an environment is not conducive to humans. CCTV cameras may work continually or only as required to observe a particular event. Here are different basic types of security cameras that are commonly used.

Wired Security Cameras-  These cameras use a series of cables that conducts footage and transform that footage into a monitor system. Transmission may get weak when the range is over 300 meters. However, using necessary signal boosters, switches, and network cables helps to minimize the long-range transmission issues. Multiple cameras generally interconnect to a monitor system located in the security room.

Analog Security Camera - These are the most commonly used and oldest types of CCTV security cameras. These cameras save images to a digital recorder which transforms the videos into a digital format. To view the videos that are saved, the DVR needs to be connected to a monitor or router to be broadcast through an internal network for remote access. However, there are some government regulations for the strength of analogue signals.

Internet Protocol Cameras - An internet protocol camera is a type of digital video camera that receives control data and sends image data through an IP network. These cameras are commonly used for surveillance and in comparison to analogue cameras, which require no local recording device, but only a local area network. Most internet protocol cameras are webcams, but the term IP camera generally applies to those that can be directly accessed over a network connection, generally used for surveillance. In 1966, the first centralized IP camera i.e Axis Neteye 200, was introduced by Axis.

Different Video Recorders for CCTV Security System

Video recorders are an important component of CCTV security systems. Each time, a CCTV camera captures something of interest, a recorder archives the footage and enables you to view it after certainty. The DVRs and NVRs are two basic forms of video recording options.

Digital Video Recorders (DVR)

It is an electronic device that saves videos in a digital format to a disk drive, USB flash drive, SSD memory card, SSD or other local or networked mass storage device. These digital video recorders were first launched in traditional analogue systems. DVRs can digitize videos from analogue video surveillance cameras at the desired frames per second and resolution. Hard disks are the recording media for  DVRs. When the hard disk storage space gets full, the new image records over the original image, making it possible to view your videos as the incident occurs.

Network Video Recorder (NVR)

A network video recorder or NVR is a specialized video recording system that consists of software programs that record videos in a digital format to a disk drive, USB drive, SD memory records, and other mass storage devices. An NVR is typically used in IP video surveillance systems.

An Additional Note About Hard Disk

You must choose a surveillance-grade hard disk for both your NVR or DVR as surveillance-grade DVR includes more additional components in comparison to the hard drives that are used in traditional computers, which enable them to operate 24 hours if required.

Benefits of Installing of CCTV Camera in Business

Here are some of the benefits of installing CCTV camera in business:

Crime Reduction

CCTV cameras proved as one of the best ways to minimize crime when used effectively. They can minimize the risk of any attempted criminal activity. As per the report shared by the UK Police report, the CCTV camera has reduced approximately 51% of the crime in some cases.

Monitor Business Activities

Through CCTV cameras, you are able to track what is going on in your premises where it is installed. By continuously monitoring the activities of workers and visitors at your business site, you and your workforce can have complete peace of mind about what is going on under your roof.

Staff Security

Safeguarding your employees is as important as safeguarding your assets. CCTV encourages excellent behaviour and helps avoid any complications due to employee violence or outside intruders. For example, in 2011, approximately 17% of all the fatal injuries in the US were due to workforce violence i.e 780 fatal work injuries every year.

Enhance Perception of Concern for Customer Safety

The presence of good security systems along with the security camera shows your customer that you care about their safety and security and can improve the overall perception of your business.

Provide a Complete Record of Your Business

Video cameras indirectly protect your employees by monitoring each visitor who enters a business area and keeping a video record of their activity.

FAQs on CCTV Full Form

Q1. What is CCTV's full name?

Ans. The CCTV’s full name is Closed - Circuit television camera.

Q2. What is the main disadvantage of CCTV?

Ans. The main disadvantage of CCTV is that they can only examine a limited area. Criminals can destroy the camera in different ways, such as sticking gums or spraying something on the camera lens. They can also change the angle of the camera. Another disadvantage of installing CCTV cameras is that some people believe they are being filmed 24/7 and it may break the trust you have with your friend or employees as they feel you don't trust them at all.

Q3. What are the rules on installing CCTV?

Ans. If your CCTV captures images beyond your property such as your neighbour’s property or public street and footpaths, then your use of the system is under data protection law. This does not mean that you are breaking the law, but it pimples that as the CCTV user, you are the data controller.

Q4. Do I need permission to install CCTV?

Ans. You don't need any permission to install CCTV unless your property is listed (when you will require a listed building agreement) or if it is rented (you should take permission from the building owner).
