CRPF is the paramilitary force that accounts to be the largest Central Armed Police Force in India. This force functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India. The prior goal of this paramilitary force is to assist the state and the union territory governments in maintaining the law and order in their states or territories. CRPF have their headquarters in New Delhi, India. The Indian government has established the CRPR academy to train the young candidates who join the force. The Central Reserve Police Force (long form of CRPF) came into this country’s police force regiment as ‘Crown Representative’s Police’ this event occurred on 27th July in the year 1939. PDF became the Central Reserve Police Force on the enactment of the CRPF Act on 28th December in the year 1949. The force has completed 81 years of its glorious history. CRPF has not only grown their troops but also has structured and built Group Centres, Training institutions, Composite hospitals, and even Field Hospitals.

Their Mission

The mission of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is to enable and assist the government to maintain the Rule of Law, Public Order, and Internal Security effectively and efficiently in the country. Their mission is also to preserve the Nation’s integrity and thereby promoting social harmony among the Indian citizens and taking care of national development by upholding the supremacy of the Constitution of India.


 The Old Days of CRPF

  • The name CRPF is derived from ‘Crown Representative's Police’ (abbreviated as CRP) this force was founded on the 27th of July 1939. The force came into action in order to protect the British people living in the vulnerable states of India.

  • In the year 1949, under the CRPF Act, the CRP was renamed CRPF.

  • On October 21st, 1959, a small CRPF patrol was brutally attacked by the Chinese soldiers and 10 out of the 20 CRPF soldiers sacrificed their lives for our country. To honor the martyrdom of these soldiers, the date October 21 is remembered as Police Commemoration Day.

  • In the 1960s, most of the state police battalions were merged with the CRPF.

  • Until 1965, CRPF was guarding the India-Pakistan Border, later the BSF troop took charge of the border.

  • CRPF played a crucial role in curbing the militant activities in Punjab during the 1980s and insurgency in Tripura during the 1990s.

  • In the year 1992, a specialized unit of CRPF called the Rapid Action Force was established by converting 10 unattached battalions of CRPF to deal with the riots happening.

  • In the year 1986, the first Mahila Battalion in CRPF was established to handle the agitations of women.

  • In the year 2001, when the Indian Parliament was attacked, CRPF killed all the five terrorists who were involved in the attack. In the same year, the force was designated as the premier internal security force of India.

  • In the year 2008, Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (abbreviated as COBRA), which is a specialized unit of CRPF, was established to counter the Naxal operations.


Role of CRPF

The role of CRPF is discussed below:

  • Protect the VIPs and all the vital installations like the airports and the powerhouses

  • To provide security during the times of elections in sensitive areas.

  • To support the Armed forces at times of war.

  • To conduct the Rescue and Relief Operations at times of natural calamities.


Structure of the CRPF Organization

The structure is represented in points:

  1. The CRPF is headed by a Director-General, he is an IPS 

  2. Next, the department is divided into ten administrative sectors, each of which is headed by an Inspector General. 

  3. Each of the sectors consists of one or more than one administrative and/or Operational Range, this is in turn headed by an officer who is of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (abbreviated as DIG) of the Police force. 

  4. Now, Group Centres are also being headed by the DIGs. 

  5. The Financial Advisor of the CRPF has always been an IRS (Indian Revenue Service). This officer is of the rank of Joint Secretary and he also has Dy Advisors from the Indian Audit and Accounts Service or the Indian Telecom. Service and Indian Civil Account Service.

  6. There are 243 battalions, (including 204 executive Battalions, 6 Mahila Battalions, 15 RAF Battalions, 10 COBRA Battalions, 5 Signal Battalions, and 1 each from the Special Duty Group and the Parliament Duty Group), hence there are approximately 1200 constables each. 

  7. Each of these battalions is commanded by a commanding officer, who is of the rank of a Commandant,   

  8. The CRPF force is organized into a headquarters, with three attached wings coupled with four zones. The zone is either headed by an additional director general or by a special director-general. This zone is then sub-divided into sectors where each of the sectors is being headed by an inspector general.

Sri Lanka Mission

The role of the CRPF force and their services rendered have extended beyond the nation's borders as well. The services rendered by the CRPF in Sri Lanka as part of IPKF, were also a part of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Namibia, Somalia, Haiti, Maldives, and also in Bosnia. All these speak volumes about their ability and versatility. 

The Haiti Mission

Haiti was under the commandment of the National Council of Government in the year 1986 under Jean Claude Duvalier. The country went through a series of political instability that moved from one military Government to another from the year 1986 to the year 1991. The country then experienced 4 military coups. In the year 1991, the military government was then replaced by a young priest named Jean Bertrand Aristide who took over as the president of Haiti after the election in November in the year 1990, Jean Bertrand Aristide was overthrown after 7 months in Sept in the year 1991 by General Cadres. The Priest Jean Bertrand Aristide took his place in an asylum in the USA with the U.S troops who prepared to enter Haiti under the orders of their President, Bill Clinton. The Wind was favorable and thus for the return of Aristide to power by the holding elections in Haiti in Oct in the year 1994.

A contingent of 120 male personnel who were selected from the CRPF and RAF Units was formed up, they were trained and were equipped for their duties at 103 RAF in Delhi and they were sent to Haiti on 31st March 1994. This contingent, which was called a Company, worked in Haiti for various duties during the election times as a part of the US Army contingent which formed the 504 Military Police Battalion (known as the Dragon Fighters) under the UN Mission in HAITI (abbreviated as UNMIH).


Duties Performed by Our Brave CRPF

The duties performed by the contingent included mobile patrolling, saturation patrolling, manning, and also guarding the Police Stations and the National Prison, this combined mounted or dismounted patrols, Prison monitor teams, and security escorts. They also trained the prisoners in the prison. All these duties were being conducted as a special arrangement for the peaceful conduct of the Presidential elections happening in Haiti.

Shri R.S.H.S Sahota who was the Commandant was the Contingent Commander. In recognition of this contingent's excellent performance in Haiti, the contingent was awarded and appreciated on the U.S. Army Commendation Medal, 5 US Army Achievement Medals, 80 appreciation coins with a UN Medal to all the 120 personnel. After a successful completion by the troops of the assigned task, this contingent was later de-inducted from Haiti November in the year 1995.
