GAIL History
GAIL abbreviation of Gas Authority of India Limited was established in August 1984 as a Central Public Sector Undertaking (PSUs) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The company was initially given the responsibility of construction, operation, and maintenance of the Hazira-Vijaipur Pipeline project. It was one of the largest natural gas pipeline projects in the world. This Hazira-Vijaipur pipeline which is 1800 Km long was built at a cost of Rs.17000 crores and it laid the foundation for the development of the market for natural gas.
In 1997, GAIL began its city gas distribution by setting up nine compressed natural gas stations.
GAIL has exhibited an organic growth in gas transmission through the years by constructing a large network of trunk pipelines covering a length of around 10,700 kilometres. GAIL played an important role in India for decades serving major industrial sectors like powers, fertilizers, and power gas distribution. GAIL transports more than 160 million cubic metre per day through its dedicated pipelines and owns more than 70% market share in both gas marketing and transmission.
