How are LEDs Different from CFLs or Incandescent bulbs?

LEDs vs Incandescent Bulbs-
Incandescent bulbs are those lighting devices in which light is emitted because of the heating of the filament. These are the oldest forms of bulbs. The bulbs have glass around them which contains a filament. When current flows through the filaments, it heats up to a certain temperature and the light gets produced. LEDs function differently. Instead of a filament, they have a diode. The diode contains two electrodes, anode and cathode. Light is produced when the current passes through these electrodes. Though Incandescent bulbs are cheaper than LED ones, LED bulbs are more common today because of their longer lifespan and greater efficiency. Incandescent bulbs produce much less light than LED bulbs as most of the energy is given out as heat. The average lifespan of a LED bulb is 50,000 hours whereas the average lifespan of an incandescent bulb is just 1,200 hours. Power used by LEDs to generate light is 6-8 watts. On the other hand, incandescent bulbs need about 60 watts of semiconductors power.
LEDs vs CFLs-
CFL bulbs are also called Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs. In CFLs, there is a tube containing argon and a small amount of mercury, which is generally folded and curved. When a current passes through the tube, the gases have a reaction that produces UV light. This is absorbed by the fluorescent material which then emits light. They are better than incandescent bulbs as they use much less energy to produce light. However, they are not quite as good as the LED bulbs and also have a shorter lifespan. The average lifespan of a CFL bulb is 8,000 hours which is comparatively less than the lifespan of a LED bulb which is 50,000 hours. Also, LEDs are durable than the CFLs as the glass can break easily and the mercury inside the tube is harmful to the environment.
