What is NSUI?
Let’s discuss what is NUSI and what is the full form of NSUI. NSUI stands for National Students' Union of India. It is the Indian National Congress party's student wing. It aims to shape future leaders for the country as well as organise and encourage students to work towards the realisation of the Indian National Congress's objectives.
History of NSUI
Since its inception on April 9, 1971, NSUI has been the torchbearer of student activism, passing from one generation of student activists to the next. This torch has remained lit to protect the rights of the student community as well as instil a sense of citizenship in students. Student activists have been identified, groomed, and moulded into leaders in a variety of fields who are qualified to represent the country.
Pre- Independence Movement
The student movement reached its apex during the struggle for independence due to the active participation of students from all walks of life. Prior to 1950, the Indian National Congress's student activism was carried out by the AICC's youth wing.
Post- Independence Movement
The student movement gained traction in Kerala and West Bengal, resulting in the formation of the West Bengal Chhatra Parishad and the Kerala Students' Union under the broad Congress umbrella. Taking inspiration from these, Smt Indira Gandhi established the NSUI on April 9, 1971, to represent the voice of millions of students, regardless of caste, creed, religion, or region.
Shri Rahul Gandhi started a revolution in 2007 by democratising the organisation through an open membership process and electing office bearers at all levels. This transformation process enabled many young leaders to emerge from the grassroots, despite their lack of political experience.
Membership
To join the NSUI, you must be under the age of 27, a student, a citizen of India, not a member of any other political organisation, and you must not have been convicted of any criminal activity in the past. NSUI divides its members into two groups: "Primary Members" and "Active Members." After the organization's scrutiny process, an aspiring member who applies for NSUI Membership becomes a Primary member.
