Full Form of RAM
Random Access Memory (RAM) is a class of computer memory that makes it possible to access data very quickly in random order. The random access memory or RAM is generally abbreviated as RAM. Basically, RAM is one of the storage devices in computers.
RAM is employed to read and write into memory. RAM stores files and data of programs that are currently being administered by the CPU. RAM is a volatile memory device because it will lose data when power is turned off. Thus, RAM is usually considered as a volatile memory, where the stored data will be lost if power is removed, although even non-volatile RAM can also be deployed in order to secure our data. In this article, we shall see the RAM full form in computers and also RAM and ROM full form.
RAM Full Form in Computer:
Before we start with the RAM full form in computer, let us have a look at the background and history of the invention of RAM. William tube was the first to create a RAM, in the year 1947, he came up with the first type of RAM and elaborated the purpose of the use of the RAM. When the RAM was first.
Demonstrated it was done using a Cathode Ray Tube (or CRTs) and the information was basically stored in the form of many electrically charged spots which appeared on the face of the tube.
Soon after the creation of RAM by William tube, in the same year 1947, magnetic-core memory was also introduced and it was used as the second widely used type of RAM. Several patents were signed in the name of Frederick Viehe, who was recognised for maximum contribution in the design work. In magnetic core memory, many small metal rings and wires were interconnecting to every ring which were used for working of Magnetic-core memory. Every ring installed in the magnetic core memory will store one bit of data and that data or the information can be accessed at any time.
Anyways, it is a known fact that the RAM was first invented by Robert Dennard in the year 1968 and the same RAM now known as solid-state memory. Initially, transistors were used in DRAMs (Dynamic Random Access Memory)to store bits of data.
So, now the full form of RAM in a computer or the RAM long form is Random Access Memory. RAM is one of the memory devices in the computer used to write and read into storage. The main function of RAM is to preserve all the files and program the data that the CPU is accessing. Since the data stored in the RAM is temporary as the data will be lost when the power is turned off, thus it is usually known as volatile memory. RAM is further subdivided into two categories:
SRAM (Static-RAM): Static RAM (or the SRAM) requires the power to store the data, at the same time it does not require the computer to be active. Some Static RAM chips are manufactured with battery backups. This kind of SRAM will have a built-in battery to ensure that no data is lost if the computer is turned off due to some technical errors. Some computers have very little SRAM and mostly consist of DRAM.
DRAM (Dynamic-RAM): Dynamic random access memory (or the DRAM) is the most frequently used and almost incorporated in every computer. Modern computers (the new generation) use various models of DRAM. Earlier in the year 2002, most computers practised single data rate (SDR) RAM. Most computers manufactured since then utilise either double data rate (DDR), DDR2, DDR3, or DDR4 RAM. The later types enable stored data to be moved and worked more quickly so that the computer's processor can keep working instantly without having to wait for data as long or as often.
RAM ROM Full Form:
Now let us have a look at the RAM ROM full form. We should not confuse the terms RAM and ROM. Both RAM and ROM are used to store the data.
We know that RAM is an abbreviation for random access memory, now ROM is an abbreviation for read-only memory, both are the memory devices in the computer. Therefore, RAM ROM full form is read-only memory.
One main difference in the RAM and ROM functioning is that RAM is volatile memory and it will temporarily store the data. Whereas the ROM is a non-volatile memory it permanently stores data and it will not be erased or lost until unless it is being deleted from memory.
Advantages of RAM:
RAM incorporates all immobile mechanical moving parts and hence its functioning is noise free.
RAM utilises extremely less power than mechanical disk drives. And the RAM reduces CO2 emissions which in turn extends battery life.
RAM is the fastest memory storage medium among the computer memory devices.
Disadvantages of RAM:
One of the major disadvantages of the RAM is its volatile nature. The Power outage will result in data loss which can not be redeemed when it is required unless there is some power backup system such as a computer battery.
Due to its high economical construction RAM cost per bit is high, thus, many computers do not incorporate RAM frequently.
Did You Know:
A computer can use a neighbourhood of the RAM to store permanent files. This is called a RAM disk. When the pc is turned on, files are copied to the RAM disk. This allows the files to open faster because RAM is quicker than permanent storage. When the pc is turned off, the knowledge on the RAM disk is lost, which is why the files got to exist on permanent storage also.
The data or the information which the computer always requires, that cannot be modified or deleted (unless it is EEPROM), is normally kept in read-only memory (ROM), which does not lose its contents when the pc is turned off. Such items include the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), which stores the most basic commands for the computer, telling it how it should startup. The BIOS also tells the computer how to input and output information. The BIOS are often compared to the part of your brain that tells your heart the way to beat. This is an important part.
FAQs on RAM Full Form
1.What Are the Three Types of RAM?
Ans: The RAM is one of the most important parts of our computer. Random-access memory is abbreviated as RAM. In modern computers, the functioning of RAM is modified according to the need. Depending on the functioning of RAM many types of RAMs are developed. Three major types of RAM are:
Static RAM (SRAM)
Dynamic RAM (DRAM)
Synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM)
2.What Is the Ram Long Form and the Full Form or Rom?
Ans: The full form of RAM is Random Access Memory and the full form of ROM is Read-Only Memory.
