12. Organic Chemistry - Some Basic Principles and Techniques

Isomerism and general introduction, Classification, and IUPAC nomenclature of organic compounds Analyses, both qualitative and quantitative. Inductive effect, electrometric effect, resonance, and hyperconjugation are all examples of electron displacement in a covalent bond. Homolytic and heterolytic bond fission of a covalent bond: organic reactions involving free radicals, carbocations, carbanions, electrophiles, and nucleophiles.

13. Hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbon Classification

(i) Aliphatic Hydrocarbons I Alkanes – Nomenclature, isomerism, physical and chemical properties, including free radical halogenation, combustion, and pyrolysis.

(ii) Alkenes – Nomenclature, double bond structure (ethene), isomerism; methods of preparation; physical and chemical properties; hydrogen, halogen, water, hydrogen halides (Markownikoff's addition and peroxide effect), ozonolysis, oxidation

(iii) Alkynes – Nomenclature, triple bond structure (ethyne), methods of preparation; physical and chemical properties: acidic character of alkynes, addition reactions with hydrogen, halogens, hydrogen halides, and water.

Aromatic Hydrocarbons II

Introduction, Nomenclature of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, benzene: resonance, aromaticity, and chemical properties: Nitration, sulphonation, halogenation, Friedel Crafts alkylation and acylation, and functional group influence on monosubstituted benzene.
