Periodic Table

It is an organized array of all the elements in the order of increasing atomic number and that actually refers to the total number of protons in the nucleus of that element. When these elements are arranged they form the periodic pattern and therefore it is known as the periodic table.


Mendeleev’s Periodic Table

Here the atoms are arranged in the 8 vertical columns known as the groups and the 7 horizontal rows known as periods and the periods gradually change or shift from metallic to non-metallic character that is from left to right.


Merits of Mendeleev’s table

There were a total of 63 elements in it and they were basically classified on the basis of their similarities in relation to the properties. There were gaps left for those elements yet to be discovered. He predicted the properties of the elements which were later on discovered and named them eka – boron, eka – aluminium, eka – silicon, etc.


Demerits of Mendeleev’s Table

a. These elements were not arranged on the basis of the increasing order of their atomic weights.

b. He didn't consider the noble gases in this periodic table.

c. There was not any provision for the isotopes.

d. The elements which are having similar chemical properties are placed in different groups and whereas those with similar properties are placed in the same groups in Mendeleev's periodic table. Henry Moseley had proved and considered that the atomic number of an element is the basic property and it is not the atomic mass and therefore the atomic number which helped in the formation of the Modern Periodic Table.


The atomic number is actually the number of protons present in the nucleus of an element. Elements are therefore arranged in the ascending order based on their atomic number which has got the same valence electrons repeated at the regular intervals and therefore it is causing periodicity.
