1. लेखक का ऑपरेशन करने से सर्जन क्यों हिचक रहे थे?

उत्तर: लेखक को एक के बाद एक तीन ख़तरनाक हार्ट अटैक आए थे, जिनके कारण उनकी नब्ज़ और साँस भी रुक गई थी। डॉक्टरों ने कह दिया था कि उनके प्राण नहीं बचे ,पर डॉक्टर बोर्जेस के नौ सौ वॉल्ट्स के शॉक्स के कारण वह बच गए। इस ख़तरनाक प्रयोग में उनका साठ प्रतिशत हार्ट हमेशा के लिए नष्ट हो गया। बचे हुए चालीस प्रतिशत हार्ट में भी तीन अवरोध थे,जिनके कारण कोई भी सर्जन लेखक का ऑपरेशन करने से हिचक रहे थे।

2. 'किताबों वाले कमरे' में रहने के पीछे लेखक के मन में क्या भावना थी?

उत्तर: लेखक को बचपन से ही किताबें पढ़ने और इकट्ठा करने का बड़ा शौक था। उन्होंने अपने घर के एक कमरे को छोटा-सा निजी पुस्तकालय बना लिया था। इस पुस्तकालय में बहुत सारे लेखकों की अलग-अलग तरह की किताबें थी। जैसे पुरानी कहानियों में राजा के प्राण तोते में होते थे,वैसे ही लेखक के प्राण इन किताबों में बसे थे। इसी कारण लेखक ने बेडरूम में न जाकर 'किताबों वाले कमरे' में रहने के लिए कहा।

3. लेखक के घर कौन-कौन-सी पत्रिकाएँ आती थीं?

उत्तर: लेखक के घर नियमित रूप से यह पत्र-पत्रिकाएँ आती थीं-आर्यमित्र साप्ताहिक,वेदोदम,सरस्वती,गृहिणी,बालसखा और चमचम। इनमें से दो बाल पत्रिकाएँ-बालसखा और चमचम खास लेखक के लिए आती थीं।

4. माँ लेखक की स्कूली पढ़ाई को लेकर क्यों चिंतित रहती थी?

उत्तर: लेखक का मन पत्र-पत्रिकाएँ पढ़ने में रहता था। बाल पत्रिकाओं के अलावा घर में जो किताबें होती, वह उन्हें भी पढ़ने की कोशिश करते और उन्हें बहुत मज़ा आता था। लेखक की शुरू की पढ़ाई के लिए घर पर ही मास्टर आते थे, क्योंकि उनके पिता को डर था की कहीं उनका बेटा नासमझ उम्र में गलत संगत में न पड़ जाए। लेखक की अन्य किताबों और पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में रूचि बहुत अधिक थी, जिस कारण उनकी माँ लेखक की स्कूली पढ़ाई को लेकर चिंतित रहती थी।

5. लेखक को किताबें पढ़ने और सहेजने का शौक कैसे लगा?

उत्तर: लेखक के घर नियमित रूप से पत्र-पत्रिकाएँ आती थीं, जिनमें से दो बाल पत्रिकाएँ-बालसखा और चमचम खास लेखक के लिए आती थीं। इन बाल पत्रिकाओं में राजकुमारों,दानवों,परियों आदि की कहानियाँ होती थीं। उन्हें पढ़ते-पढ़ते लेखक को पत्रिकाएँ पढ़ने का शौक लग गया। घर में और भी किताबें थीं जिन्हें लेखक पढ़ने की कोशिश करते थे। पाँचवी कक्षा में प्रथम आने पर उन्हें दो अंग्रेज़ी की किताबें इनाम में मिली थीं। इन दो किताबों ने लेखक के लिए एक नयी दुनिया के दरवाज़े खोल दिए, जहाँ उन्हें बहुत मज़ा आता। लेखक के पिता ने अलमारी में जगह बना कर यह दो किताबें रखकर लेखक की निजी लाइब्रेरी की नीव रखी। अपने बढ़ते शौक के चलते लेखक को किताबें पढ़ने और सहेजने का शौक लग गया।

6. स्कूल से इनाम में मिली अंग्रेज़ी की दोनों पुस्तकों ने किस प्रकार लेखक के लिए नयी दुनिया के द्वार खोल दिए?

उत्तर: स्कूल में पाँचवी कक्षा में प्रथम आने पर लेखक को इनाम में अंग्रेज़ी की दो किताबें मिली। पहली किताब में दो बच्चे घोसले की खोज में जगह-जगह भटकते और अलग-अलग पक्षियों के बारे में जानकारी प्राप्त करते। दूसरी किताब का नाम था-"ट्रस्टी द रग" जिसमें पानी के जहाज़ों के बारे में बताया गया था। एक ओर था पंछियों से भरा आसमान और दूसरी ओर गहरा सागर। इन दोनों किताबों ने लेखक के लिए एक नयी दुनिया के द्वार खोल दिए।

7. "आज से यह खाना तुम्हारी अपनी किताबों का। यह तुम्हारी अपनी लाइब्रेरी है"-पिता के इस कथन से लेखक को क्या प्रेरणा मिली?

उत्तर: लेखक को जब स्कूल से इनाम में दो अंग्रेज़ी की किताबें मिली तो उनके पिता ने अलमारी का एक खाना खाली करके वे किताबें वहाँ रख दी और कहा कि आज से वह लेखक की अपनी लाइब्रेरी है। लेखक को पहले से ही किताबें और पत्रिकाएँ पढ़ने में बहुत रूचि थी। पिता के इस कथन से उन्हें किताबें जमा करने की प्रेरणा मिली, जिसके कारण भविष्य में लेखक अपने एक कमरे में एक अच्छा-सा पुस्तकालय बनाने में सफ़ल हुए।

8. लेखक द्वारा पहली पुस्तक खरीदने का वर्णन अपने शब्दों में कीजिए।

उत्तर: लेखक के पिता की मृत्यु के बाद आर्थिक तंगी के कारण अपने शौक की किताबें खरीदना असंभव था। एक ट्रस्ट से योग्य परंतु असहाय छात्रों को पाठ्यपुस्तक खरीदने के पैसे मिलते थे। इससे लेखक सेकंड-हैंड किताबें खरीदते थे। इंटरमीडिएट पास करके, जब लेखक ने किताबें बेचकर बी.ए. की सेकंड-हैंड बुकशॉप से किताबें खरीदी तो दो रूपए बच गए। उन दिनों 'देवदास' फिल्म लगी थी, जिसका गाना "दुःख के दिन बीतत नाही" लेखक अक्सर गुनगुनाते रहते थे, तो एक दिन उनकी माँ ने उन्हें समझाया कि दुख के दिन बीत जाएँगे। लेखक ने जब अपनी माँ को बताया कि यह एक फिल्म का गाना है तो माँ ने फिल्में नापसंद होते हुए भी लेखक को 'देवदास' देखने की अनुमति दे दी। जब लेखक फिल्म देखने जा रहे थे तो पास ही एक दुकान पर 'देवदास' पुस्तक रखी थी। फिल्म देखने की जगह लेखक ने दस आने में वह पुस्तक खरीद ली और बचे हुए पैसे माँ को दे दिए। इस प्रकार लेखक ने अपनी पहली पुस्तक खरीदी।
