Double fertilisation is the type of fertilisation that occurs in flowering plants which are also known as the angiosperms. The process of double fertilisation involves the female gametophyte (embryo sac) fertilising with male gametes (sperm). The process begins when pollen grains stick to the stigma of the carpel which is the female reproductive part of the flower. The pollen grain then begins to germinate forming a pollen tube that starts extending towards the ovary. The tip of the pollen tube then enters the ovary penetrating the micropyle opening of the ovule. Now the pollen tube releases two sperm to the female reproductive part.
