Preparation of State Merit List (of NEET 2019): The Process Overview

After NTA publishes the All India NEET rank, the state collates the marks obtained by students belonging to the respective states. You need to register yourself and submit your roll number on the states’ respective medical authority websites to check your rank. The NEET rank list 2019 PDF was prepared following the same procedure.

There are approximately one lakh seats in the government medical colleges across the country. But the number of candidates who appear for the NEET exam is more than ten lakhs. Naturally, the competition is too high. So it becomes necessary to know the state rank, as the competition gets less fierce when you look at it from the state angle. The state rank NEET 2019 worked the same way for last year’s candidates.

Let’s elucidate with an example: If you get 714061  as your NEET all India rank, you have to face stiff competition if you factor in the whole country. But if you factor in only the state, you can be eligible for state quota seats. This happened to a candidate belonging to West Bengal. His AIR was 714061, yet he was able to find a place in the state merit list of NEET 2019.

There are two rounds of counselling and rank distribution process that follows the announcement of the state rank NEET UG (2019) results. Round 1 shows the list of candidates irrespective of whether they have registered themselves with the concerned state body. Round 2 is the final list that shows the list of candidates eligible for state quota seats. Round 2 excludes surrendered and non-reported candidates.

Each state has their own counselling body that brings out the state merit list of NEET (2019). You need to be in touch with your state’s counselling body after NTA publishes your result. The work of the state counselling body does not stop after the publication of state merit list of NEET UG (2019). There are waiting lists and round 2 of the counselling that need to be managed by it after that.

The state merit list of NEET UG (2019) shows which candidates are eligible for the 85% state quota seats. The remaining 15% seats are filled up by NTA-organised counselling. This is called ALL India Quota or AIQ.

There are management quota seats for those who fail to have a place in the state rank NEET UG 2019 list. The management quota seats are not subsidised by the government. Hence, they are expensive. However, management quota will help you avoid dropping a year.

Publication of the NEET Results

NTA publishes the NEET results before the states come out with their individual ranks. In 2019, NEET published result on 5th June. Students need to keep their roll numbers handy while searching for their results on the NTA NEET website.

NTA also allows you to see your filled-up answer sheet. This is one of the most transparent examinations held in India. No aspect of the exam process is unknown from you. Read below to know what more powers NTA has conferred to the students.

Eligibility for Securing a Place in NEET State Rank 2020

The eligibility criteria vary for students from different states and that includes domicile, for obvious reasons, and schooling among others. However, one thing is compulsory - you must complete Class 12 or equivalent examination to be able to compete through NEET and pursue MBBS/BAMS/BDS/BUMS courses in various government colleges.

Besides, you must secure the minimum cutoff percentile in NEET for that year for admission to the state quota seats and other private colleges. The NEET cutoff percentile along with the cutoff scores of 2019 and 2018 are given below for your better understanding:

Some Important Information On NEET State Rank:

Following are some of the important highlights of NEET state-wise rank list (2019):

  • The NEET 2019 rank list is not provided by the NTA authorities. Medical counselling authorities of the states are responsible for state ranks.

  • Always examine your state’s counselling websites. When they allow, register yourself for counselling.

  • State ranks are released a few days after the NEET all India results. Don't worry if the relevant authorities delay their publication.

  • There is no algorithm to predict state rank, so, do not confuse yourself. You will not know state rank by dividing your rank by the number of participating states. The merits of students belonging to different states are not the same.

  • The previous year’s state ranks will not be able to predict your state rank. Do not use it either.

  • Subpar state rank does not mean that you do not have a chance anymore. As long as you get the minimum qualifying NEET marks, there are management quota seats that you can apply for to save one year drop.
