What is the Pound?

During your school days, you used to prefer a pound or a two-pound cake for your birthday celebration. So, do you know what is the lbs unit and how much is a pound in weight? Therefore on the 1st of July 1959, the six countries signed an international yard and pound agreement. As per the agreement, the value of a common pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Other countries made it legal at various times by signing this agreement. In 1951, most of the commonwealth nations agreed to this conversion.


This agreement is not just a link between the pound and the kilogram but also a link between the metric system and mass units. There are also 16 ounces in a pound, where one ounce is (0.45359237/16) kilograms.

Therefore, m(kg) = m(lb) × 0.45359237
